Wage-Definition Impact Calculator

The Labour Codes define "wages" so that Basic, DA and retaining allowance must together be at least half of total remuneration. Many Indian salary structures sit well below that, having grown allowance-heavy over years of restructuring. This prices what correcting it would cost — and who bears the cost.

Basic + DA is 42.9% of remuneration. The Codes wage definition sets a 50% floor, so this structure is exposed.

Total remuneration
Total remuneration₹70,000
Current Basic + DA₹30,000
Required Basic + DA at 50%₹35,000

What restructuring would change

Current versus Codes-compliant structure, with the difference
MeasureCurrentRestructuredChange
Basic + DA₹30,000₹35,000+₹5,000
PF total (monthly)
Employee + employer
₹6,000₹6,000₹0
Gratuity accrual (annual)₹17,308₹20,192+₹2,885
Take-home (monthly)
After the employee's own PF share
₹67,000₹67,000₹0

The take-home figure usually falls, because a larger Basic + DA means a larger employee PF deduction. That money is not lost — it accrues in the employee’s provident fund — but it does leave the monthly pay packet, and any restructuring conversation that omits this will not survive contact with employees.

Formula

ratio = (Basic + DA + retaining allowance) ÷ total remuneration

If ratio < 0.5, the structure is exposed. Restructured Basic + DA is
then 50% of total remuneration, with the difference taken out of
allowances, holding total remuneration constant.

PF, gratuity accrual and take-home are recomputed on the new Basic + DA.
